A UK VAT invoice needs a few specific things a normal invoice doesn't: the VAT rate applied, the VAT amount shown separately from the subtotal, and your VAT Registration Number (VRN). This generator handles all three — pick a rate of 20%, 5% or 0%, and the VAT amount and grand total recalculate automatically as you add line items.
Your VRN lives in your account's Company & VAT settings, not on the invoice form itself, so you only ever type it once. It's then included automatically on every invoice you create — and left off entirely if you're not VAT registered, since showing a VAT number you don't have would be incorrect.
This tool helps you lay the figures out correctly; it does not check whether you should be charging VAT on a particular sale or submit anything to HMRC. If you're unsure whether a transaction is standard-rated, reduced-rated, zero-rated or exempt, that's worth confirming with an accountant or on gov.uk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Standard (20%), Reduced (5%) and Zero (0%) — the three main UK VAT rates — are built into the invoice form as a dropdown.
In your account, under Company & VAT settings. Tick "My business is VAT registered" and enter your VRN there once — it then appears automatically on your invoices.
You can change the VAT rate on each individual invoice when you create it, regardless of your default rate — the default just saves you re-selecting it every time.
